MELODIES OF MOTHERHOOD: STORIES OF NORTH CAROLINA’S WORKING MUSICIAN MOTHERS WITH RISSI PALMER

Confession: The night I found out I was pregnant with Grace, I was terrified. B and I had only been married 4 months,  I had just gotten out of my record deal and was preparing to go to LA to meet some new producers and planning my next career path. How was this pregnancy going to affect my dreams? Clearly nothing was ever going to be the same... Luckily for me, it wasn't.

Motherhood has changed me in ways that I am so grateful for. It's not everyone's journey but I am so thankful that it has been mine...

You can read the full interview HERE.

Thank you so much Carly P. Jones and Come Hear NC for including me in this :-)

Rissi Palmer releases new single "Seeds"

On Monday, October 15, my new single and video "Seeds" was made public. I want to thank BlackGirlsAllowed.netTheUrbanMusicScene.com, and GuitarGirlMag.com for being early supporters of the video. The video is available on Youtube and all digital outlets (you can click the photo above to hear and see  "Seeds").  Here is an open letter I wrote to anyone curious about the message of "Seeds":

Friends,

I am extremely excited and proud to present to you the short film based on my song "Seeds". I want to thank each and every person that made this happen, most importantly the director and screenwriter, Emil Gallardo. This was a labor of love from start to finish, with people volunteering their time and resources to be a part of making this film.

We wrote the song "Seeds" in 2014 after the murder of Michael Brown. I felt powerless and wanted to say something to uplift and empower everyone...including myself. The song is based on the words of Greek Poet Dinos Christianopoulos, "They tried to bury us, they didn't know we were seeds."

I am very aware that the images in this video are triggering and jarring and will evoke strong emotion...I hope they do. I hope that after watching this, you are fired up and ready to vote, to volunteer, to protest, to make change. We're sooooo past Republican and Democrat, black and white, right now, we're fighting for our decency and humanity. I truly believe that we will be judged by future generations harshly for staying silent on the issues we are facing today. Every negative action in the film has a positive reaction, meaning WE have the power to change the ugly in this world.

As always, I thank you for your support and if you feel so moved, please share this video and song with your family and friends.

God Bless you all and please make your voice heard this November 6 and every day after...

With love,

Rissi

Attention San Jose friends: I will be in town shooting a video for my song Seeds with film maker Emil Gallardo on Saturday, August 18. As you may or may not know, Seeds was written to empower us to fight for social justice and recognize how powerful we are when we fight together rather than against each other. This short film/video is a collaboration between Emil and I to motivate people to get out and vote in the upcoming midterm elections. If you have been looking for a way to get involved, here's an opportunity. We are seeking extras to bring this story to life. We need all ethnicities, shapes, orientations, etc. Click on the link below for location information if interested: https://www.facebook.com/events/230792204272757/

Soul Of Cash...available TODAY!!!

"Thanks to his passionate delivery and gift for interpretation, Owens successfully proves that the songs of Johnny Cash belong every bit in the soul canon as they do in country." - Joseph Hudak, Rolling Stone Magazine

A year ago, I got a phone call to come sing on a project that bridges the gap between Country and Soul music...and I immediately said "YES!!!". Brian Owens brought together some incredible musicians and singers to perform song from an iconic American artist, Johnny Cash, and I'm honored to have been among them. It's authentic, soulful, and a beautiful tribute to a great artist. Soul of Cash features "Ring of Fire", "Folsom Prison", and an original song written by myself and Brian called "Soul in My Country". You can read more about it at RollingStone.com and get a copy on Itunes, Amazon, and Spotify.  I will also be performing at the album release party in Nashville on Friday, Oct. 13, RSVP HERE for the show!!!

Introducing WeAreSeeds.net

Over the last year, I've been racking my brain, trying to figure out what I could do to add to the discourse that is happening in this country right now and do it in a positive way. A dear friend suggested I combine my love of children and current events and she sparked something in me. I thought, If we as adults can't wrap our minds around what's happening, imagine how confusing it must be for children? The result is this blog, WeAreSeeds.net, focused on "raising happy, healthy, socially conscious, intellectual, and spiritually strong children in the 'Post-Truth' Resistance Era". The name was inspired by my upcoming album, Seeds, and a proverb that states: “They tried to cut us down, they didn’t know we were seeds.”  I will feature articles, videos, quotes, and cartoons aimed at how to equip our children for the very adult social issues they face these days. I hope that you'll visit, find things that are helpful, and even contribute to the content on the page. May many conversations be started and hearts and minds changed because of content of this blog...

I pray love, peace, and understanding for us all,

Rissi
